The archduke trio is fullly in the spirit of the seventh and eight symphonies: monumental, richly polyphonic and constructed as robust architecture. This was the model for all later nineteenth century piano trios. The first performance took place in 1814 as part of a chamber music evening organised by the famous violinist Ignaz Schuppanzigh. The public first performance was in the viennese prater and was one of beethoven’s last appearances as a concert pianist.
