Camille saint-saëns 1835-1921 was the model to which all french composers aspired
because of his mastery of composition in every musical genre. He was for ravel for
instance the greatest inspiration. Saint-saëns was the very first french composer
to write a piano concerto, curiously enough, and already when he was 22 years old,
but he was equally at home in the symphony, the symphonic poem, in opera and in chamber
music. His second piano trio holds the listener in its spell through the extravert
rhetoric and ever-present forward momentum.
