Alexander von Zemlinsky 1871-
trio for clarinet, cello and piano in d, opus 3
I allegro ma non troppo
II andante
III allegro
Zemlinsky’s trio for clarinet, cello and piano was written five years after the work for the same instruments by Brahms, Op.114 and was inspired when the composer met personally his illustrious predecessor. Even so the work is not just an imitation by any means. Brahms himself was so impressed by his admirer’s work that he gave it a personal recommendation with the publisher Simrock.
